It is a spectrum analyzer not a signal strength measurer, so even right next to an access point all you will see are the periodically beacon frames. I know what you mean about the graphs not looking the samples they provide.
I always used Chanalyser with the wireless card in and Inssider going at the same time. Oct 29, Chanalzer I'm not sure how this would compare feature-wise, but I have been meaning to give this a try: I suppose that would help produce something on the graphs.

As far as your recordings looking nothing like the samples, you should check out this FAQ page: Simon, I found that to get a good image you have to leave it for 30 mins. I have seen bursts of apparently strong signal on Chanalyser for 30 seconds or so at apparently random times when it does look more like the samples provided.

I wondered if the STH experts knew of any more cost effective solutions which would enable me to monitor for interference etc. That's without me jiggling chanalyzsr antenna or touching the laptop at all.

Anyone know of a wifi smart plug with default on after outage? MetaGeek Inssider is free, and open source. It may not be chanaoyzer most user friendly approach but it's nearly free.

Results 1 to 5 of 5. MetaGeek recommend 24 hours but I haven't done that as it means leaving it unattended. I can't explain that. Plugged it into one laptop at one school - instructions say plug in - then load CD software and nothing much else - no handbook My displays were nothing like the example they show on the screen.
Chanalyzer crash
I am not sure if it will meat your needs, Passmark has WirelessMon which works pretty good. Thanks to metageektrent from: Jan 24, Messages: We're a secondary with lots of laptops so there's always wireless traffic whizzing about. Anyway, despite this drawback it did help fix my problems.
The time now is I used one of these for the research for my dissertation.
